Numerology: A Practical Overview

A simple guide to Universal Years, Personal Years, and your name in numerology

Have you heard about numerology in passing and thought mmmm, I wonder what that is? Maybe even someone you know mentioned a “personal year”, maybe you saw a post about numbers and timing. It could have even come up whilst you were already trying to make sense of what is happening in your business or even life. Numerology can sound interesting and yet also a bit unclear like you know you are meant to understand it already.

I have written this blog to put everything in one place. Simply put, it is a practical overview. The part where we slow down and look at how numerology actually works without being vague or overcomplicated. You were learn about Universal Years, Personal Years, and how your name is used in numerology. that is explained in a way that makes sense in real life and not just on paper or the screen.

I am letting you know that you don’t need to believe anything or use it as a rulebook. Think of it more like a reference that you can come back to anytime you are trying to understand about timing, patterns, or why certain years feel different to others. This can be especially helpful when you are running a business and making decisions that don’t exist in a neat, step-by-step order.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this post:

  • What a Universal Year is and how it’s calculated
  • How Personal Years work and why they matter
  • How your full name is used in numerology
  • Where to go next if you want to explore each part properly

Let’s start with the basics and build from there.

What Numerology Is (In Practical Terms)

Numerology is a way of looking at patterns and timing. It is not meant to predict your future or explaining your business and life in minute detail. It is a framework that can help you make sense of why certain periods in your life feel easier, heavier, faster, or slower than others.

In this context, numerology is used as a reference point. It gives you a way to take a step back and look at what kind of year you are in, what themes tend to show up during that time, and how those themes might affect decisions, energy and focus. Especially when life and business don’t move in straight lines.

Numerology doesn’t tell you what you should do, when you should do it, or how things must unfold. It is another tool that you can use alongside your own experience, judgement and common sense.

The reason that numerology can be useful is that time moves in cycles. Some years are about starting, some are about building, some are about change, and some are finishing things off. Once you understand these cycles then it can become so much easier to recognise why certain years feel different, and why when you try to push the same way every year doesn’t always work.

The idea of cycles is where Universal Years come in, which is where we go to next.

What a Universal Year Is

A Universal Year is the overall theme that runs through a calendar year. As the word Universal suggest it affects everyone, regardless of age, background, or what’s going on with you personally. Think of it like this. It is the wider environment that you are living in (Earth), and is the backdrop that influences how things in the world tend to move.

Each Universal Year has its own focus. Some years naturally support starting new things, whilst other years are better suited to building, adjusting, reviewing or finishing. This doesn’t meant that everyone experiences the year in the same way, but the general tone is shared.

This is often felt quite clearly in business. You’ll notice certain years where many people will start new ventures, change direction, slow down, or even reassess what actually works. It can show up i client-behaviour, decision making, and even how much energy it takes to get things moving. That’s the collective nature of a Universal Year at play.

How to Calculate the Universal Year

Calculating the Universal Year is straightforward. You add together the digits of the calendar year and reduce the total to a single digit between 1 and 9.

For example:

2027
2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11
1 + 1 = 2

In this example, 2027 is a Universal Year 2

Once you know the Universal Year then you can start to understand the general theme of the year that you are in. From there you can in Your Personal Year, which explains how that wider theme affects you individually.

Each year has its own theme. You can read more about what each Universal Year means here:  (Links to come when I write the blogs)

What a Personal Year Is

Whilst the Universal Year sets the overall theme, a Personal Year looks at how that theme shows up for you specifically. It is unique to each person and is based on your birth date, which is why people can experience the same year very differently.

Your Personal Year highlights where your focus tends to sit during that time. Some years like the Universal Year, naturally draw you to start new things, others to relationships, work, rest, change or wrapping things up. It doesn’t override the Universal Year, but it does explain how you move personally within it.

Your Personal Year is explained in more detail in my Introduction to Personal Years Blog. (Link o come)

How to Calculate a Personal Year

To calculate your Personal Year, you add together your day and month of birth with the current calendar year, then reduce the total to a single digit between 1 and 9.

For example:

If your birthday is 14 March and the year is 2027:

Day: 1 + 4 = 5
Month: 3
Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2

Add them together:
5 + 3 + 2 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

In this example, the Personal Year is 1.

Knowing your Personal Year helps you understand where your energy is likely to be drawn and why certain things feel more important at different times.

Next, we’ll look at how names are used in numerology and how to calculate a name using your full birth name.

How Names Work in Numerology

In numerology, names are treated a little differently to years. Whilst the years change and move in cycles, your name carries a steady influence. It doesn’t shift from one year to the next in the same way that the Universal and Personal Year numbers do.

This part of numerology looks at how your name is structured and the energy that it holds over time. It’s often used to understand how someone approaches things, how they naturally operate, and how they tend to be experienced by others. Think of it as background information rather than something that changes with circumstances.

For the purpose of this blog, the key thing to know is that name numerology is based on your full birth name. The name that you were given at birth, before any later changes.

In my blog Name Numerology I got into much more detail about this. You can find it here. (Link to come)

How to Calculate a Name Number

When calculating your name in numerology, you use:

  • Your first name
  • Your middle name or names (if you have them)
  • Your last name

All parts are included. Nicknames, shortened names, or business names aren’t used for this calculation. The full birth name is the reference point.

Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number from 1 to 9. To calculate a name number, you convert each letter in your full birth name to its number value, add them together, and then reduce the total to a single digit between 1 and 9.

The process looks like this:

  • Assign a number to each letter (A–Z)
  • Add together all the letters from your full birth name
  • Reduce the total until you reach a single digit

That final number is the main name number used in numerology.

This number doesn’t replace year-based numbers. It sits alongside them and adds context, which becomes more useful once you start looking at timing through Universal and Personal Years.

Next, we’ll bring these numbers together and look at how Universal Years, Personal Years, and names work alongside each other.

How These Numbers Work Together

Each of these numbers looks at a different layer. On their own, they’re useful. Together, they give a clearer picture of what’s going on and why certain periods feel the way they do.

The Universal Year sets the overall tone. Your Personal Year sits within that, and your name number adds another layer underneath. When you look at all three together, you’re not trying to predict outcomes. You’re building context.

Think of it like a cake. Each layer on its own gives you something, but when you stack them, you have more structure and support. The numbers work the same way as when they are added together, they give you more to work with as you move through business and life.

How to Use This Information

This blog was designed as a reference point for you. You can come back to it whenever you need a refresher on how the numbers are calculated or how the different layers fit together.

For deeper context I have created blogs for the Universal Years, Personal Years and a more in depth blog on name numerology. These posts are where the practical focus is unpacked at a deeper level.

It’s also worth revisiting your numbers each year. The Universal Year changes, your Personal Year moves on, and how those interact will shift over time. Coming back to the calculations helps keep the information useful, rather than something you read once and forget.

Conclusion

Numerology doesn’t need to be complicated to be useful. Think of learning how to drive a car. You learnt a couple of things at a time and then you were driving. You had lessons until you got your licence. This is what this blog is. A manual for to come back to as you need to plan, review or try yo makes sense of a particular phase. Used this way, numerology stays grounded and practical. A reference you can work with, rather than something you have to follow.
